23,863 Children Killed in Syria since March 2011
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) published a report documenting the deaths of 23,863 children in Syria since the start of the Syrian conflict in March 2011. Children have been victims of human rights violations and been systematically targeted by the Syrian Regime and allied parties.
The SNHR reports that the Syrian Regime and their allies have perpetrated 94% off all violations against children. The Syrian Regime have been the main party to the destruction of approximately 3871 schools. Children have also been effected by the crumbling health sector due to lack of medial access and the continued bombings of hospitals in Syria.
According to the SNHR, 4,546 children have been subject to arrests and detainment since March 2011. The main party to detain children in Syrian are government forces at 62%. The second high perpetrator is unidentified groups, who have abducted children 826 children.
ISIS has perpetrated war crimes against children in the form of shelling, killing, torture and sexual assault according to the SNHR report. ISIS has killed 438 children and detained no less than 217 children.
“When we document a daily, monthly, and yearly cumulation of this huge number of children victims without any real or actual international sympathy, this undoubtedly annihilate the norm of the Responsibility to Protect. Who is responsible for protecting Syria’s children from barrel bombs, chemical weapons, sniping, and starving? This question is for the major states who are claiming to be the leaders of the world.” says Fadel Abdul Ghani, chairman of SNHR.
The Security Council should do everything in their power to stop the indiscriminate attacks against children. The crimes committed against children since March 2011 constitute as war crimes and crimes against humanity. It is up to the international community to halt the violence against children.
