10,204 Civilians Killed In Syria In 2017

The Syrian Network For Human Rights (SNHR) reports the death tolls for 2017 in Syria. A total of 10,204 civilians have been killed including 2,298 children and 1,536 women.

In 2017, the Syrian Regime killed 4148 civilians, including 754 children and 591 women. International Coalition forces killed 1759 civilians, including 521 children and 332 women.

The SNHR report also shows that Russian Forces killed 1436 civilians in 2017, including 439 children and 284 women . ISIS and other extremist groups forces killed 1446 civilians, including 283 children.

In 2017, the highest targeted areas included Damascus and its suburbs and Raqqa, with death tolls in Aleppo, Deir-Ez-Zour and Idlib not to far behind.

This year saw a drop in deaths in areas included in the cease-fire, announced on December 30th, 2016. De-escalation agreements continued through 2017 and further de-escalation zones were established in Idlib, Homsm Eatern Ghouta and parts of the Daraa and Quneitra governments.
After the agreements, markets became more active, and schools were able to re-open in certain areas. However, breeches did not stop in all areas. The Syrian Regime caused the most breeches to the de-escalation agreements. Russian forces did respect agreements despite their alliance with the Assad Regime, and Syria saw less deaths at their hands this year.

While de-escalation agreements have helped the situation in Syria, international human rights violations continued to happen. The Syria Regime continued to kill civilians, with 90% of the civilian death toll for 2017 at their hands. Extremist groups, International Forces and Kurdish forces also carried out extrajudicial killings that constitute as war crimes through the year 2017, and should be held accountable by the International Community.
