Trafficking, Debt, And Slavery – The Horrible Future Facing Many Refugees
It goes without saying that the current refugee crisis is deeply, deeply, horrible. Millions of displaced people are struggling with the trauma of not only losing their own country, but of being unable to find a new one. Crammed into sordid and squalid refugee camps while the world ponders their fate, these people are desperate, and the situation is swiftly becoming unmanageable. Yet there is one group of people who are benefitting from all of this human misery – traffickers.
Death By Dangerous Journey
Even those who do not become indebted slaves are likely to suffer from being trafficked. For a start, trafficking methods are extremely dangerous. Little consideration is given to the preservation of human life. There have been many awful incidents in which people suffocated, froze, boiled to death in the back of vans or lorries. Others have drowned, been run over, been electrocuted, starved, dehydrated – the terrible litany of mortality goes on and on. Should they reach their destination alive, the already destitute people have nothing left, having given all of their meagre savings and possessions to the trafficking gangs. Traumatized, alone, and with nothing to their names, they are abandoned to somehow make their own way in an alien nation. Their futures, needless to say, are rarely bright.
Not simply for the sake of the humans involved, but for the sake of law and order, the international community needs to do something about the refugee crisis, before the trafficking gangs really dig in their claws."
